In Labyrinth of Blooms, Katrina Pallon translates the emblematic spiral into different compositions in acrylics, watercolor, and photos. Fusing ornate Pan-Asian motifs and exquisite blooms, Pallon enjoins the onlooker to look closely into each exhibit piece - to see past visual labyrinths of colors, patterns and that symbolic flora – as she relates different stories of women through a visual spectacle comprised of paintings & photographs.

Katrina Pallon’s “The Female of the Species”: Romanticizing the Feminine

By Evan Tan

In Katrina Pallon’s latest exhibit, “The Female of the Species”, she puts together three years’ worth of images inspired by both real and imaginary women. Here, one witnesses an array of stunning photographs taken by the professional mask-maker, illustrator, graphic artist, painter, and singer during those precious moments when she opts to wield her camera, and use it as a medium for her distinct artistic style.

Like a womb that serves as an instrument of life, the camera of this multi-talented artist ushers to existence powerful vignettes of Pallon’s feminine characters. The audience is treated to photographs with varying degrees of intense emotions that evoke the same fierce feelings among those who lay eyes upon them. Each portrait is a visual delight. From the anguish of the virgin queen so palpable from the expression possessing her face, to the playful coyness of the lady brandishing her fan as if it was a blade ready to slice her lover’s heart, all these pictures captivate and enchant those who lay eyes upon them.

One cannot help but be entranced by the beauty that Pallon offers to her audience – a beauty that transcends and challenges the traditional feminine perceptions most hold. It flits from the morbid to the defiant, and darts from despondency to a drunkenness of life itself. But one thing is definite: timidity shall never describe any of these women that the artist presents to us. They indeed are the women Kipling had in mind when he wrote: “’Twas the women, not the warriors, turned those stark enthusiasts pale. For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.”
